Legends of Slots

★★★★☆ 4.2 Editor rating

Legends of Slots sounds like one thing and turns out to be another. Underneath the spinning reels is a collection game: match the symbols to fill out your little bestiary of knights, dragons and forest spirits, each drawn in a soft storybook style. Every spin nudges a progress bar, and unlocking a new creature card gives you a short piece of lore to read. It's the kind of thing you poke at for a few minutes while waiting for a bus.

Controls couldn't be simpler — one tap to spin, a swipe to browse your collection. There's no timer breathing down your neck and nothing demands your attention when you close the app. We played the whole thing offline on a flight and it never once asked for a connection, which is exactly what we want from a pick-up-and-put-down title.

What won us over was the pacing. The game never pushes. You finish a chapter of the little kingdom's story, the music shifts, and you move on. It's not deep, but it's calm and well made, and the artwork carries it a long way.
